Hello, At the last sparks conI came into a large sum of wealth. Perhaps the best use of the money would be getting a droid and outfitting it with all the useful skills I don't have, like medicine, piloting+ astrogation, various repairs, and assorted knowledge. I can do these and, if I do it right, I can even reliably meet the skill DC (If I do a Tudor droid, I'd only need to meet the Easy difficulties in order to upgrade perception and technical). Is it possible to just purchase this between games, or do I need to do this in a PI at the next con? Or is there some completely different thing I need to do?
I could also theoretically buy multiple droids, but it seems an unnecessary level of clutter.

Nothing can be purchased or sold outside/between events.
Sometimes in modules there will be opportunities for shopping. Some even have droid shops. It is best to have a list of specific things you are in the market for, including references, availability, and prices around so that you cam make the best out of these opportunities without bogging down the module as the GM may not have a lot of references on hand at the table. PC chosen/created custom things wont be available in modules in shops, but they generally will have some stock droids and maybe some customization or modifications available. Of course, many modules do not have the time for shopping in them either...
But if you are looking for custom made droids (or other gear), then most of the time you're sure bet is to get everything together and take a Personal Initiative (PI) at an Interactive, Seminar, or Shore Leave where you can choose where to go or what to do without worrying about a preset mission. The more details on what you are looking for are given to the GM in advance will generally lead to better/quicker/easier acquisition of whatever. And if you have the skills you can even build a lot of things during PI's as well.

An easy way to go about it, is to parouse through the books, write down what droid (or other equipment) you wish to buy, what its base cost (and availability rating, 2, 3, 4, A, F or X is, and print that out on a sheet to have with you. This way if there's any needed rolls (such as bargaining, streetwise or business to find, and the like), when you do your PI, you already have it wrote out. Just have a line on the sheet, to write down "what con, event and DM handled doing it for you" for them to sign.

Thank you both for the information! Sounds like for my needs I will definitely need a PI for it, but I can have everything written and prepared.

We have some sheets for putting together shopping lists.
For a good way to browse gear, look up the books Star Wars D6 (Equipment, Weapons, Starships, Vehicles, Droids). there's a book for each of them, and they have lots of information, including cost, rarity level, and other restrictions.
Rarity is 1-4, with 1 being common, 2 being rarer, 3 being limited availability outside of some systems, and 4 is unique and local to specific locations or just hard to find. There is also F, R, and X. F is usually a fee to purchase, R is restricted to license holders, and X is just flat illegal. At least that's what I recall off the top of my head. Generally 1 is easy to get, 2 is harder but generally not too difficult, and beyond that takes time or money or both.
Also remember, Droids count as sheet levels, so you become +1 sheet higher for tiering when you use a droid per 10,000 credit value of the droid (each droid is separate, round up) with the exception of one 2,000 credit droid. This shouldn't stop you, as they're useful, particularly for PIs, but you can't simply build a droid army and take it with you everywhere.

Do droids only count for sheets if you use them? I mean if the droids stay on the ship and don't do anything (except mundane tasks like cooking/cleaning/plotting hyperspace course) then they shouldn't contribute to the tiering. Right?
In a recent module, my character obtained a Litigation Droid, but I didn't get the stats on it. Can you point me in the right direction to find it?
Tim, where are the shopping list sheets? Granted, they should be pretty simple but there may be information that should be included that people may not think of. If we don't have one, I'll make one.

Even if they doo only one skill role, such as hyperspace plotting, they count.

Even if they doo only one skill role, such as hyperspace plotting, they count. Yup. If they do anything other than add background flavor, they count (other than the 2,000 credit exception, everyone gets 1 2,000 credit exception). If they are integrated into the ship, they can count if you bring the ship. You have to declare them ahead of time, so if you don't declare them, they're not available for use if you need them later for some reason.
